So I was watchin VH1 Storytellers: Kanye West earlier today, as I was watchin and listening, I pondered to myself Kanye's lyrical digression. I've said this to my friends before but I feel that Kanye was waaaayyyy more lyrical on The College Dropout & Late Registration than on his 2 latest projects. And thats not to say that he still doesn't have lyrics, but I feel that since he stopped writing he has dumbed down his lyrics in an effort to be like Jay-Z, Biggie or Lil Wayne, or just to say he doesn't write. I just thought to myself how much harder he went lyrically when he initially came on the scene..Then I thought well if he hadn't gone as hard from the gate would he have made it as far as he's come, making it to the stage where no matter what he does good or bad, it's a big deal.. I'll always be a fan regardless, but personally I feel that while he's grown as a producer, he's lagged in the lyrics. That's what hip-hop is supposed to be about: Lyrics.. I miss old Kanye, maybe he'll come back one day..
Since I'm talkin about old Kanye, here are 2 of my favorite Kanye produced tracks & verses.
Slum Village- Selfish Ft. Kanye West & John Legend.
Dilated Peoples- This Way Ft. Kanye West
